Contemporary Photographs


Pride in Turkmen culture persists to this day. In
October, 2000 I visited Turkmenistan to attend a cultural conference sponsored by the leader,Turkmenbashi. This conference was organized to fete Turkic culture throughout the region with Turkmenistan hosting it and positioning itself at the very center of Central Asian Turkic culture.

The women of Turkmenistan have always been and are still the sole conduit for maintaining a link with the past, acting to preserve the culture and pass it on to the next generation. Clearly their taste for traditional dance and costume is very evident here in these photographs.
