Baluch Kilim, SE Persia, 19th C., 3'10" x 11'2"

An extremely old example of flat weave work from the Baluch people of SE Persia.

Some textiles exude a ‘presence’ that is difficult to translate into words.  When one views this kilim hanging on a wall or lying next to other similarly patterned examples, it is clear this one is older than most we ever see.

In a sense it is a historical document in addition to a visually fascinating example of this type of flat weave.

The condition is apparent in the photograph, there is some damage, fraying and more but with no unsightly efforts to restore or repair.

The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
