Baluch Chanteh, NE Persia, 19th Century, 1’6” x 2’5”
An older example of this type of weaving that was originally made by women for personal possessions. A double sided bag that has been opened up, the wear patterns suggest this is older than many others we occasionally see. The border is, perhaps, the most unusual feature as it is one that is seldom seen, reflecting a design that must be considered rare. The field pattern is not unknown but seldom seen in the chanteh format but rather more common in rugs and larger bags. The condition is not without some wear, some of which is due to the corrosive quality of the dyes as well as wear due to age and use. The colors are all derived from natural dyes. |
