Indian Dhurrie, Bikaneer region(?), circa 1900, 3’ 11” x 6’ 10”

Dhurries, cotton floor covers (as well as made for other functions in different sizes) are a traditional craft of India, including various locations in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and elsewhere.  The best ones surely were made for special functions, as large expansive weavings do exist for social and/or political functions.

This piece may very well have been a dowry weaving, another function these weavings served.  The elaborately executed design is quite pleasing, and surely is a bit unusual as well, ie not your standard commercial weaving by any stretch of the imagination.

The condition is good, with no holes or repairs.  The back side is faded due to many years of over exposure to the sun as it was in the possession of a local collector in the SF Bay Area until recently.  The dyes are derived from natural sources.
