Baluch Rug, SE Persia, 19th Century, 2’ 10” 3’ 11”

Small rugs of this type are extremely rare; the format, while known, is unusual as is the field design and border format.  Again, the sides are eroded with only vestiges of the selvedges remaining.  The scale in which the ashiks of the field are drawn reflects a much older aesethetic, suggesting the rug itself is much older than we normally see as well.  The hexagonal cartouche pattern in the border is a feature associated solely to the Baluch of SE Persia and is seldom if ever used elsewhere in the Baluch weaving world.

The condition is apparent in the photographs; there is one repair in the field (difficult to see from the back, and unseen from the front).  All the colors are derived from natural dyes.
