Kilim Fragment, East Anatolia, 19th Century, 2’ 7” x 4’ 3”

While not the earliest kilim in the current exhibition in the gallery space, the quality of color and the dye saturation is superb.  The  presence of supplemental patterning in the ‘mihrab’ is considered by some to be a later feature.  The prolific use of cochineal, while eschewed by some on a personal level, is not an indication of age one way or another, neither earlier or later.  The art, first and foremost, is the ultimate indication of age.   The condition of this fragment, not without a few minor holes, is superb, complete from selvedge to selvedge, the colors are great (all derived from natural dyes) and the graphics are lovely.  Mounted already, sewn down onto a linen background cloth and currently stretched over a wooden frame.
