Yoruk Rug, East Anatolia, 19th Century, 3' 3" x 5'4"

The Kurdish population of east Anatolia produced some of the more colorful rugs from the 19th century.  Too often, weavings from other locales woven at  this relatively late date look “tired”.  But the blazing colors of the Kurds shine in comparison and this example is no exception.

Divided into four compartments, the field design is appropriately informal and spontaneous, without any of the self conscious adherence to a codified aesthetic that typifies weavings from a more urban setting.  The borders, too, reflect this quality.

The condition is obvious in the photographs, the rug is fresh from Anatolia and has not been subjected to any restoration/repair efforts.  The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
