Baluch Rug, NE Persia, 19th Century, 3’2” x 4’10

A well known but not common type of Baluch weaving from NE Persia.  The medallions in the field seem to have the flavor of a ‘turkic’ culture rather than a Persian tribal cultural context.  The regularity of the patterning, the boldness of the patterns and the colors used all suggest an affinity with a foreign aesthetic.   The camel wool ground provides a lovely contrast to the designs in red and blue.

The condition is relatively good, there are no repairs in the field or borders, the selveges get a bit ragged in places where the goat hair wrapping is worn away.  The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
