Yomud Torba, Central Asia, 19th Century, 3’ 8” x 1’ 6”

The ‘kepse’ gol that adorns this Yomud torba (or trapping, it is unsure which function it may have served in the past) is an ornament that one occasionally sees in Turkmen bags, but seldom do we see them with three medallions as seen here.  The drawing is rather grand, with the gols rendered in a very ‘tall’ fashion, ie they are not elliptical in orientation at all.

The border, too, is quite nicely done and extremely colorful, as well as not being a very common border and with those on the bottom and top ends differing from those of the sides, it seems to be an older, rather than younger, weaving.

The condition is ok, there is some wear in the field (see detail photos) as well as some moth damage at the bottom end (see detail photo).  There is also a bit of damage in the upper right corner.  The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
