Afshar Bag Face, S. Persia, late 19th Century, 1’ 5” x 1’ 8”

A charming little bag face made by the Afshar of S. Persia.  The boteh designs in the field resemble birds facing away from each other, rather than the more traditional confronting posture.   Probably one half of a saddle bag (no flatwoven back is extant), the simplicity of the weaving with an attempt to construct a more complex border system belies the naïvete of the weaver.

The condition is ok, there is a repair in the middle (see detail photo, front and back) but good pile, and the colors are all derived from natural dyes.

Price - $500
