Tekke Turkmen Mafrash, Central Asia, 19th Century, 2’ 8” x 1’
Mafrash are some of the nicer weavings of the Turkmen, very manageable in terms of size and the designs are succinct, concise statements. Referred to as the “aina” gol motif (‘aina’ translated means ‘mirror’). The significance of the name associated with this design is uncertain, but a classic. The borders, too, are spaciously drawn and classic. The condition is generally good, the only damage is in the upper left and right corners, from where it was hung in the tent. The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
