Tekke Turkmen Carpet, Central Asia (Turkmenistan), 19th Century, 3' 2" x 6' 3"
An interesting rug from Central Asia, not made in the usual size. At first, one might think it is a 'kejebe' mat, or small rug for the wooden litter mounted on top of a camel for the wedding procession. This rug is longer, but the width corresponds to that size of rug. Nevertheless it is an odd sized rug. The Tekke are renowned among the Turkmen as master weavers with an amazing use of color. The reds are saturated, as are the remainder of the colors used. There is some damage, see detail images, there is minor damage on the selveges, minor wear in one area (seen in the detail image) and a lightening of the color at one end, possibly due to a urine stain long ago. Urine is known to "bleach" colors. The weave is fine, see the final detail image. All the colors are derived from natural dyes.
