Homage to the Past

In stark contrast to the stone imagery of the South Indian temples, the women of India add color to this sublime setting in Karnataka state (formerly Mysore State). Located in Bellur, the kings of  the Hoysala dynasty constructed the 'Chennakeshava' temple. Dedicated to Vishnu, the temple features magnificent art which is an attraction for Indian and foreign tourists alike.

The women in S. India are extremely colorful in dress, far more so than their counterparts in the north.  The gentle femininity of the two women barely holding hands as they circumambulate the temple in the traditional manner, is a poignant feature of the gentle women of the Subcontinent.
