Out of Time
The town of Puri, in Orissa State (east India), is an amazing place, seemingly lost in time.
It has retained all of the charms and mystery that young overland travelers found so fascinating
40 years ago. I’ve always been attracted to scenes on the subcontinent where you could very well imagine what it was like to be in this very same place 100 or, sometimes, even 500 years, ago. The mystery and timeless quality of life in the villages and cities of India is the most memorable aspect of my travels in India over the years.
Somehow this image captures some of those feelings. Note the shadowy figure of someone seated inside what must be a Hindu temple with the doorway flanked by Hanuman (on the left) and another ‘aspect’ of the monkey god to the right, bearing the same attributes.
