Stranger on a Train Riding the trains of India is a unique experience, one that all travellers to the Subcontinent should do. Things have changed with online booking, cleaner terminals with better food available, and they are no longer steam driven with none of the black soot with which one was inevitably covered after a journey. This photo was taken on a local train from Madras (Chennai) to Kanchipuram, early one morning in the ladies compartment reserved for women travelling alone). The compartment was nearly empty, and this woman never paid us any attention at all. I could not resist taking the photo. The calm she exudes is palpable as we bumped and rocked through the passing landscape of Tamil Nadu. Coincidentally the bag on the seat next to her bears a manufacturers name that says it all - MONALISA 15" x 20" (mounted black gatorboard w/mount for hanging) |
