Baluch Embroidery, SE Persia/SW Pakistan, circa 1920(?), 8" x 8"
| A very finely embroidered textile made by the Baluch of SE Persia and SW Pakistan. Such embroideries were once folded, like an envelope, and used as small bags in which a woman might keep her valuables, ie. jewelry. The stitching is amazingly fine. The condition is perfect, and the colors appear to be a combination of natural dyes with perhaps a synthetic. It is a bit difficult to determine as the manner in which dyes take to silk is much different than how the same dye might look on wool. The colors do reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the Baluch weavers, a palette not unfamiliar on pile weavings from the same area. |
