Ersari Chuval, Central Asia, late(?) 19th century, 4' 11" x 3' 6"

A beatufully drawn chuval from the Ersari weaving groups, probably located in northern Afghanistan and woven in the latter part of the 19th century. The design is very much akin to that one would encounter in earlier Saryk work, as the gols (including the gol centers) are drawn in that style as is the border arrangement. The elem is unusual, more in the Ersar/Beshir style than a Saryk style.

The condition is perfect, with virtually full pile throughout, and the flatwoven back totally intact. The colors are all very saturated, and derived from natural dyes including a beautiful shade of red for the ground color, masterfully applied to the lustrous wool.
