Tekke Turkmen "Kedjebe" Rug, 19th century, 3' x 3' 1"
| Another old and quite wonderful small rug made by the Tekke Turkmen of Central Asia. These small rugs were made to cover the floor of the wooden litter that was mounted on the back of camel inside of which the young bride would be seated. The primary 'gols' seen here mimic those seen on larger main carpets. The secondary 'chemche' gol too is one that might be seen on a larger carpet or other weaving. The border is very simple, and the presence of a clear and unfaded green (the yellow component of the dye has not deteriorated over time) suggest a weaving of some age.
The condition is ok, there is some overall even wear, a small patch in the field (see detail image) and the a small break in the selvedge on the right side (see detail image). The colors are all extremely saturated, with a beautiful clear madder red. All the colors are derived from natural dyes. |
