Baluch Rug, NE Persia, 19th c., 3' 3" x 5" 4"

An extremely old example of the 'mina khani' design type. Many rugs with this design appear to incorporate a symmetry of patterning that inevitably leads to a stiffness that I find unappealing. This example appears to be both older and more well drawn than most, with a spontaneous rendition within the framework of a very formal design The borders, too, are unusual, differing from top and bottom as compared with those on the sides, a characteristic thought to be associated with older weavings. The back is very flat, with little warp depression, again a characteristic that suggests and older dating. To think of this weaving as circa 1850, or possibly before, is quite reasonable.

The condition is decent, with some not unexpected slight wear (see detail images), but no repairs nor any holes, and the colors are all derived from natural dyes.
