Kirghiz Embroidery, Central Asia, circa 1900, 1’10” x 2’3”

A colorful and eye dazzling example of non Turkmen Central Asian embroidery.  These embroideries were used decoratively in the tents and homes of these people.  Often thought of as ‘talismans’, they may very well be representations of the universe, as the medallions on rugs from other weaving groups may be (see “Ancient Imprints”).

The condition is good, with no holes.  It does need a cleaning as it is literally fresh from the field and could use a dry cleaning.  The colors appear to be all derived from natural dyes with none of the obvious synthetics (primarily the purple that we often see in these Central Asian embroideries), possibly suggestive of greater age than many we have seen over the years.   The trade cloth on the back of the embroidery is exceptionally nice as well.
