Uzbek Kilim, Central Asia, late 19th century, 4' 7" x 9' 3"
| A very colorful and complete Uzbek kilim from Central Asia. Usually these textiles are composed of cut bands from the SAME band, but this composition is composed of narrow bands sewn together from at least two very different types of bands, with varying palette and weave, as well as the spin of the wool. The result is quite successful, but it was definitely put together for floor use, rather than dowry. The varying width of the bands and palette lends a vibrancy to the 'look', a visually active and very decorative example of textile art from Central Asia.
The condition is good, see detail photo below for one cut - and - shut band at the very top of the kilim, otherwise, no repairs, no re-weaves nor stains. The colors are all derived from natural dyes. |
