A finely woven Shahsavan soumac panel, presumably from the Karabagh region of the Caucasus.
The designs in the horizontal bands are beautifully balanced and extremely graphic. The primary central band is drawn in such a manner as to throw the eye off, presenting the dark blue background as the primary design, rather than the ornaments which float effortlessly on the surface.
The condition is ok, there are minor repairs on the top edge, but otherwise free of repair or re-weave.
The colors are beautifully saturated, with an absolutely sublime blue/green, light blue, a clear aubergine and an equally pleasing madder red, all derived from natural dyes.
