Yomud Turkmen Applique Asmalyk, late(?) 19th century, 3' 4" x 2' 4"

Textiles such as this are relatively rare in the marketplace, as these were things that were not commonly made, are somewht fragile (not lending themselves to longevity as their pile counterparts are) and really not considered to be integral to the material culture of the Turkmen. Textiles, including embroidery, are often discounted by those who collect pile weavings. Nevertheless this is an authentic example of textile art, possibly made by a Turkmen family that was too poor to produce an opulent pile weaving to adorn the camel during the wedding procession.

The condition is good, with no holes or stains. It is composed of trade cloth cut and sewn together.
