Huari Headband, S. Coast Peru, circa 200 AD
| A complete headband from early Peru, from the Huari culture and dating to circa 200 AD. The band is complete, albeit with some signs of wear and use over the centuries, but still in good condition with very little damage.
In huari iconography you never get naturalistic portrayals like you do in the later periods. its always based on "psychedelic visions" centering around the "floating shamanistic staff god with bird head" or the "oculate being", which i kind of see here. The oculate being is some deity or principle which is made up usually of a head with eyes, sometimes with toungues spewing out. |
