Uzbek or Karakalpak Bag Face, late(?) 19th century, 1' 4" x 3' 4"
| An interesting type of weaving, a bag face or pillow face, made by one of the many non Turkmen weaving groups of Central Asia. Often such weavings are attributed to the Karakalpak weavers, but precise attributions are best left to those in the field or the Russian Museum community. The design is clearly derived from Turkmen iconography, including the classic border, the primary gols, and the 'chemche' secondary gols.
The condition is good, with no holes or stains. The colors appear to be derived from natural dyes. |
