Baluch Prayer Rug, NE Persia/NW Afghanistan, 19th century, 3' 3" x 4' 3"

The myth and mystique surrounding prayer rugs of this design type is quite formidable, contributing to what definitely must be considered a collectible type of weaving. Known as "Doctor i Qazi" prayer rugs, the myth related by Jerry Anderson is quite a story (see From the Horse's Mouth - Talking Baluch WIth Jerry Anderson). This type is characterized by the pointed 'mihrab' and a field design similar to what is seen here, a shrub like ornament. The borders seen here are also associated with this type, especially the primary border. This is clearly an older example of this design type, with a wonderful handle, good colors and nice drawing.

The condition is ok, there is some overall even wear (for the most part), no repairs, only very minor re-piling (see detail image), eroded kilim ends, original selvedges. All the colors are derived from natural dyes.
