Uzbek Suzani, Central Asia, 19th century, 4' 4" x 7' 3"

Textiles of this type are known to come from present day Uzbekistan, in the environs of Tashkent and Pskent. The overall pattern reflects a fascination with the heavens on the part of these people, often depiciting sun/moon/star patterning. The embroidery consists of silk stitching applied to a hand loomed linen ground cloth. Thought to be dowry pieces, these textiles have been preserved for posterity.

The only damage to this example is a corrosive red dyed wool stitch (see detail images). All the colors are derived from natural dyes.
