Baluch Rug, NE Persia (Khorassan), 19th century, 3'1" x 4' 9"
| A very old example of Baluch weaving from NE Persia. I am guessing most people would attribute this type of weaving to the Taimuri weaving group, but really it would be done without proper documentation. The type, though, is one I would assoicate with a classical tradition, with the field design consisting of vertical bands of desing more often seen used as borders. The actual border of this rug is exceptional, a tour de force of reciprocal patterning interlocked, contributing to a wonderful 'look'. The vertical bands with stars are also quite nice, with the red ground forming a more compelling and interesting pattern than the primary star ornaments.
Rugs of this desing type are known, but considered to be quite rare. The handle and wool suggest a dating firmly in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, ie circa 1865 or so. The condition is good, with only some corrosion evident, but no real 'wear', and no repairs, holes or stains. The colors are all saturated and derived from natural dyes. |
