Baluch Prayer Rug, NE Persia (Khorassan), late 19th century/early 20th century, 2' 11" x 4' 3"
| To see Baluch prayer rugs woven "upside down", ie. with the weaver having started at the top of the rug and worked her way down, with elements depicted in the same way, is a curious feature, one that I cannot remember having seen. Note the animals upside down in the 'mihrab', and the tree elements in the field are also upside down.
The condition is ok, there is some wear (see detail images), some of the selvedge wrap is loose, no holes or repairs, and all the colors are derived from natural dyes. |
