Baluch Rug, NE Persia, late 19th century, 3' 5" x 5' 8"

An unusual variation on the classic "Mina Khani" pattern. The design seen here in the field is more often seen used as a border design on rugs of the "Mina Khani" pattern. With the original selvedge replaced, it is of course impossible to see if the structure of that selvedge would correspond to that seen in other examples of this design group (four cord selvedge overcast with goat hair is the norm). The border seen here is more readily associated with "Taimuri" group Baluch weavings, rather than those from the Torbat-i-Heydari region from where most of the "mina khani" rugs come.

The colors are all derived from natural dyes, and the condition is ok, there is some corrosion in the field (due to the iron oxide mordant used) but no repairs, holes or re-weaves.
