Uzbek Embroidered Band, Central Asia, 19th century, 2' 3" x 3"
| A lovely embroidery with a fascinating design. Such bands may have been used as belts, used to keep an ikat chapan or coat closed, etc. The design seen here is a fascinating one, a pattern that has always provided an abundance of visual entertainment. The colors are vivid, all derived from natural dyes. There is a corrosive dye used too, applied onto wool and used in the midst of the silk thread. The corrosive dye is evident in the first detail image below.. |
