Uzbek Flat Weave, 19th century, Central Asia, 4' 4" x 4" 9"

This weaving was originally conceived to be a ‘bag’ of sorts, a storage receptacle for bedding and/or clothing.  With the weaving placed face down on the floor, such items were placed in the middle of the weaving and subsequently the corners were folded over and the contents protected from dust and could be safely put away along the sides of the tent.

The design pool is quite exotic, certainly different than what we see used on the larger covers and floor coverings.

The condition is good, with no holes or repairs.  The colors are all derived from natural dyes.
