Afshar Rug, S. Persia, 19th century, 4' 2" x 6' 4"

A lovely rug attributable to the Afshars of S. Persia. The design is reminiscent of a classic Kerman carpet pattern, with a distinctively modeled boteh, finely drawn on a white ground. The borders are elegantly drawn, with an extremely delicate hand evident in the primary border and brililant coloration seen in the secondary borders on either side.

The weave is extremely fine, with 130 kpsi (10h x 13v), resulting in an extremely supple handle. The rug feels like a piece of cloth in the hand and folds up to be very small.

The condition is very good, with overall even wear, no holes or repair. The detail photos below present a very accurate image regarding the condition of the pile. The top end is slightly eroded (see detall image below), while the bottom end retains vestiges of the kilim end finish. The selvedges are original and intact, retaining original selvedge wrapping in multi colored wool.
