Uzbek "Jajim", Central Asia, late 19th century, 4' 1" x 4' 4"

Such weavings are composed of narrow bands of warp faced weavings, sewn together to make these rather elegant and graphic jajims or kilims. The size of this piece suggests the jajim function, to be used as a hanging or cover of some sort. The design and palette are very special. This repeating "umbrella" type pattern is a classic 'turkic' motif, seen in old Anatolian weavings as well as found among the weavings of other Central Asian tribal groups including the Baluch. The condition is good, with no repairs. The colours are outstanding, a very saturated palette with a striking red, orange/red, blue, green and yellow.
